Hello, there fellow foodies and welcome back to my blog! As you may have noticed, the blog has undergone a few repairs and renovations since you last visited, including a new name! Yes, The Food Feed has since been rebranded as “Good Eats with Ems”! I began this food journey a little over three months ago and, boy, has it been a fun one. Over the next few months, the rate at which I post on this blog is going to decline. Instead of weekly posts, it will most likely dwindle down to only one per month. But fear not, I’m not going anywhere! For those of you on social media, you can find me on Instagram at @good_eats_with_ems! I’ll be posting my new food adventures primarily through here because I have come to prefer this platform over blogging. As a foodie, I get to not only enjoy my food but share those meals with the world visually. Instagram allows me to focus more on the visual representation of the food because a picture truly is worth a million words. For those of you looking to stay involved with me on social media, click the Instagram and Twitter icons at the bottom of this page and give me a follow!

Now, let’s get into this food! I had the pleasure of indulging in a funky feast at Sovereign this weekend. Located in downtown Plainfield, this metal-themed bar and restaurant is truly one of a kind. Sovereign prides itself on its ever-changing menu of locally based food and brews, giving a middle finger to many bar clichés. I think that's what makes them stand out the most, their "I'm going to do what I want to do and I don't care what you think" vibe is present in their menu, the wall signage and the overall presence in the bar. Although it may be off-putting to some people, I appreciate their dedication to stay true to themselves and their brand. Moving on from the atmosphere, lets get into the food. On this trip, I got to try their market risotto and the “Wiccan chicken” entrée.

The risotto was their market appetizer this week and was filled with tri-tip beef and jalapenos in a mushroom sauce, all stuffed within a pepper and covered in an American cheese sauce. I really did enjoy this dish, it was a nice hearty appetizer and it felt home-cooked. There were a few short-comings for me though. First, the risotto didn’t seem like it was cooked long enough to create that rich creamy sauce that risotto typically has. It had the consistency of rice that had been soaking in sauce, which was not what I was expecting when I took a bite. Additionally, although the cheese sauce was tasty, the use of American cheese really confused me. I would have preferred a heartier cheese, like fontina, to accompany such a luscious dish. Now on to the entrée!

The Wiccan chicken was plated with red mashed potatoes, pan-fried chicken covered in gravy, accompanied by sauteed green beans. The potatoes were rich and dense, maybe lacking a little bit of butter but overall, I loved them. The chicken really wasn’t what I was expecting when I saw “fried chicken” on the menu, although the pan-fried chicken was amazing and cooked to perfection, it just not what I was looking forward to. And lastly the green beans, they were perfectly cooked with still a little crunch and not over seasoned.

Overall the food was phenomenal, Sovereign never seems to disappoint and their rotating menu keeps things interesting all year round. If you’re looking to stop by Sovereign for yourself you can find them at 24205 Lockport Street in downtown Plainfield.
